I would use Photoshop (or the cut down version Photoshop Elements free with some printers) above any other image editing programme. Apart from the fact is is very flexible and easy to use (once you have mastered the basic concept of layers and tools) it also has lots of free tutorials, plugins and filters available on the web - one of which, Knockout, is much better for stuff like pulling a background image out of hair.
The other major thing you need is to learn to see better - no I'm not taking the mick - if you go to art college you learn to look at things differently like the negative space around an object as well as the object itself. This, and knowing the basic proportions of the human body (like the head is a 6th of the height), all help you with proportion - yours is way out at the moment. Finally, you need to understand light and tone, if the light direction on your face is different to the body it will never look right - ditto the skin tone. There endeth life drawing 101 :: maverik |
